Treat the timer as the schedule keeper and MODI as the controller for answer choices, undo, audio replay, or navigation, depending on the mode and app. The remote should not be presented as the reason a timed method works; it simply gives you a consistent way to send supported review commands during each block.
MODI is an independent Bluetooth accessory, not a product made, endorsed, or certified by Anki, AnkiMobile, AnkiDroid, Quizlet, Apple, Google, Microsoft, or Amazon. Once the remote responds correctly in your chosen app, the Pomodoro-style part is mostly a matter of deciding when to start, pause, and close each review block. Keep the Pomodoro timer outside the remote workflow. MODI does not provide a built-in interval timer, and the review app remains responsible for its own study screen, actions, and shortcuts. Use a clock, phone timer, desktop timer, or another timing tool for the length of each work block and break. This separation prevents confusion when a card action works correctly but the timing reminder, notification, or alarm comes from somewhere else.
Before starting a session, place the timer where you can see or hear it without mixing it up with the remote’s status lights. MODI’s documented LEDs describe connection, charging, low battery, and decorative lighting behavior, not Pomodoro progress. A flashing or solid light should not be interpreted as a block ending, a break beginning, or a battery percentage. If you want visual timing cues, keep them on the separate timer, where those cues are defined.
Set up the review block only after confirming that the remote is paired in the mode that matches your app. Keyboard Mode is intended for desktop Anki use with preset keybindings and does not require the MODI add-on for the default workflow. Switch Mode is the standard mobile setup for AnkiMobile and AnkiDroid because it exposes gamepad-style inputs. Choose the mode first, open the relevant deck or filtered deck, then start the separate timer before answering the first card.
A practical block setup is to wake the remote, confirm the app responds, start the timer, and begin reviewing. The recommended MODI orientation is vertical with the D-pad facing down, but the main goal is predictable button access during the interval. If you use the desktop add-on for custom mapping, verify those assignments before the timed block starts. Avoid changing connection modes, Bluetooth pairings, or app-level controls once the clock is running unless you pause the routine first.
During the work interval, use only the controls that are already documented or configured for your environment. In Keyboard Mode, MODI includes preset inputs for common desktop review actions such as Again, Hard, Good or Next, Easy, Undo, Suspend, Escape, Spacebar, and direction-key navigation. Desktop Anki also has its own keyboard controls, including Space or Enter to reveal an answer or choose Good, and 1 through 4 when answer buttons are available on the current study screen.
On mobile, the control list comes from the app’s supported configuration screens. In AnkiMobile, use Switch Mode and assign gamepad actions under Settings, Review, and Gamepads. In AnkiDroid, use Switch Mode and configure Settings, Controls, and Set Key Binds. If Android displays X-Y-B-A inputs as Y-X-A-B, treat it as a label mismatch in the menu; the assigned commands can still function normally if the action responds during review. Test once before relying on it during a timed block.
When the timer signals a break, stop sending review commands and let the app stay in a stable state. You can leave the current card visible, finish the answer you already started, or close the deck according to your own routine. The important point is that the break boundary comes from the timer, not from MODI. The remote can remain nearby, but it should not become a substitute for deciding when the break starts or ends.
MODI sleeps after about 2.5 minutes without a Bluetooth connection or 5 minutes of inactivity, so short breaks may leave it ready to reconnect while longer pauses may require waking it. Press Home to wake and reconnect in the last-used mode. To manually sleep or turn off the remote, hold Home for 3 seconds. If you keep decorative lighting on during breaks, remember that practical battery life depends on leaving those lights off when they are not needed.
At the end of a review block, do a brief check before starting the next timer interval. Confirm that the app is still responding to the expected MODI inputs, that the deck or screen is where you intend it to be, and that no accidental command is queued from handling the remote during the alarm. This is also a reasonable moment to notice whether low-battery behavior appears, such as the LED flashing red quickly before another work interval.
If the remote connects but does not respond after you have changed devices or modes, avoid troubleshooting inside the timed interval. Forget saved MODI or Anki remote Bluetooth entries, repeat the full pairing steps for the desired mode, and test again outside the block. If a fresh pairing still connects without usable input, restart the host device and try again. That diagnostic path keeps Bluetooth state, app settings, and remote behavior separate from the timer routine.
After a few blocks, adjust the routine around what actually caused friction. If the timer was missed, change the timer placement or alert style. If review commands were inconsistent, check mode, Bluetooth pairing, and app configuration. If the remote felt awkward in hand, reposition it or simplify the mapped actions you use most often. Keep those changes practical and observable, rather than assuming the timed method or remote will produce a particular study result.
A Pomodoro-style Anki routine is easier to manage when each tool has a narrow job: the timer marks intervals, Anki or the mobile app manages review actions, and MODI sends the supported input you selected. That division also makes troubleshooting clearer because you can identify whether the issue is timing, pairing, key mapping, or app behavior. Use the routine as a repeatable structure, not as a promise about grades, recall, health, academic performance, review volume, speed, or any fixed outcome.
